UNITED FIRE BRIGADES ASSOCIATION
- f YESTERDAY’S j/uiNUS. The weather was ideal for the opening of the Competitions yesterday, and the proceedings attracted considerable attention. The attendance was good, ulany peonle from the country being present and enjoying the diversified programme. Some of the events e. cited special interest. • When Masterton beat Hawera’s smart time in the One Alan Event, the excitement was very great and seemed to communicate itself to all parts of the ground. The record time put up made the result of outstanding interest. The programme was put through very well, and the fact that three events were completed was creditable indeed to th© management of the Association, which had a number of officials well versed in all details at its disposal. PRINCESS THEATRE. There was a large attendance at the Princess Theatre bust night for the entertainment organised by Miss Ann Duff as a benefit for the local Fire Brigade funds. The organiser was successful in providing a splendid first part, every item being warmly applauded. Air and Airs Arnold Perry are undoubtedly a great acquisition to the town. Their musical abilities with which they are so generous, are very superior indeed. Both were heard to good effect in solos, but the charm of the duets rendered will long remain a memory.. The “Aliserere” duet was not too exacting—a full rendition being given, while the encore number 1 - A Night in Venice” was a delight in pleasing blending. Airs Harrison sang ■most pleasingly, one of the popular songs of the day with an easy and eirective grace. The Al.isses Lynn rendered a delightful duet and little Cora sang with marked success “The Lilac Tree.” The see mi, “To a Miniature,” in which Misses Alva Alclntosh, Bald and Duff appeared, was vociferously received, as it deserved to be. The “Afusical Alenu” was well done by the chorus of waiters, and the humour well brought out. Variety was lent to the programme by Air’ S. Brooks' Hebrew sketches, and the amusing fooling of Alessrs Preston and' Gillooly. • Two visiting firemen supplinientcd this section by some burlesque work which amused greatly. The dancing by .Misses Gwen Jacobs and Alva Alclntosh was capably executed, and Air G. Lakin also presented a dancing sketch to the pleasure of- the audience. Aliss Giese was the accompanist in chief for the exacting programme, assisted in part by Alisses G. Jacobs and J. Alclntosh. Ross Bros.’ Orchestra lent friendly aid with the overture, and in providing incidental music throughout the evening. The second part of the programme was the burlesque revue “Fire” written arid composed by Aliss Duff. Allbough produced here previously, ; was greatly enjoyed again. All the principal characters were well sustained and the vocal numbers by. Aliss Duff and Air P. Renton were well redered. The chorus was good, and the comic lire brigade seemed quite at home in their unusual parts. The piece went well all through, the amusing dialogue and business providing ..mam a laugh. The visitors enjoyed the playette. and the local amateurs are tube credited with a very good perlormance indeed. Air R. Lynn wa stage director, and with his assistants had a busy time, but the curtain fol finally just before 1] o’clock. Air Evans returned thanks publicly to Afiss Duff and .her assistant performers for organising the entertainment, specially mentioning Alessrs Ross Bros for their help with the orchestra .music at the last moment. The financial result for the object in view b expected to show a profit of ahoir. £SO which is very gratifying to the management.
JUBILEE. DEMONSTRATIONS. CASS SQUARE, HOKITIKA. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2Sth. Throughout the day, with an interval ol an hour for luncheon the competitions were continued and. the events were run off smoothly, without the slightest hitch. There was a host of officials, three sets being engaged on different events and all worked smooth ly. The visiting Executive of the Associatoin were very pleased with the condition and arrangements of Cass Square and Secretary Watts officially stated that the ground appointments were the best the Association had over had and that the. water pressure was very satisfactory. It was also stated that the modern innovations to the programme, introduced for the first time in the present instance, had proved an unqualified success and would uiuluuhtedly he included in nil future programmes. There was one hardship for a running team inasmuch as when putting up excellent time they struck the wrong disc and were disqualified when they had put up what otherwise would have been a prize-winning time. Three events were concluded and a j fourth one started. The billowing are i the complete results of the three com-1 pleted:—
