Owing to the numerous fires which have occurred in Westport since Christmas, it is the general opinion about the town that there is. a fire fiend at work (says the “Times ”). So far no explanation for any dt the fires has been forthcoming. The latest out break occurred on Sunday morning, in a six-roomed house in Upper Russell Street, owned bv Mrs Gear, of New Plymouth, and occupied by Mr and Airs Thomas Comet-ford and family. The fire is said to have originated in the kitchen and it quickly spread to other parts of the house. Neighbours assisted in getting a good deal of furniture out. The houehold effects were not covered hv insurance, and in addition Mr Coinerford lost his fortnight’s 'pay. The house was insured for £3OO.
