MOUNT RUDOLPH CLIMBED

CHRISTCHURCH LADY’S FEAT. WAIHO GORGE, February 2(5. .Miss Edna Barrett, daughter of Mr A. J. Barrett, Brown’s road, Merivale, Christchurch, aeronipanied by Guides Frank Alack and Charles Jensen, made a successful ascent ot Mount Rudolph (00S1 feet) on February 20th. The party left the Glacier Hotel on the l«)th and ascended the Franz Josef Glacier to the Aimer Bivouac, next day crossing the head snowfield to Graham’s Saddle and thence by the north-east main route to the summit. The weather was glorious and wonderful views were obtained on both sides of the divide. This is the second lime that Mount Rudolph has been climbed, but the first time from the Westland side. The first and only other ascent of the peak was made from Malte Brim Hut on January 21st, 1914, by Mrs Rotor G rail am, o'.'. Wailio Gorge. She was accompanied by her husband, who was tlien chic guide at the Hermitage. Miss Barrett, accompanied bv Guide Frank Alack, also made the ascent of Mount Bismarck (H 321 foot) in the Kaiser Fritz Range. Leaving the Ahner Bivouac, they proceeded across the Franz Josef Glacier above the Blot and ascended through the. icelall «t the Melchoir Glacier and to the summit Of Bismarck by the north face. Miss Barrett was fascinated by the wonderful panoramic view obtained from Bismarck in every direction, the north face of Mount Tasman presenting n wonderful spectacle. The descent was made bv traversing Mounts Roon and Moltke down Defiance Hut and Burke to the Glacier Hotel.
