DR BETTINGTON

FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN CRICKETER. AUCKLAND, February 26. Dr R. H. Bettington, who lias an established reputation .as a cricketer for New South Wales and Australia, arrived by the Mautiganui this morning. Re is to be married in New Zealand on April 11 to Miss Marion Lowry, at Okawa, Hawke’s Bay, and so will form another link in what is undoubtedly New Zealand’s most prominent sporting family. A sistor to Hr Bettington’s fiancee, Miss Gertrude Lowry, married the captain of the English cricket team now in Australia, A. P. F. Chapman. Three sons of Mr T. IT. Lowry, who is a well-known figure in racing, have all been prominent in athletics. On the Maunganui this morning with Hr Bettington was J. N. Lowry, who won his tennis “blue” at Cambridge University. Mr Lowry was also captain of the Cambridge-Oxford tennis team which, toured America several years ago. T. C. Lowry, who captained the Wellington cricket team this season, was captain of the Cambridge cricket team, and also played tor Somerset. Dr Bettington was educated at Oxifordwhere he was prominent as a Rugby full-back. In the United Kingdom be had a reputation for his long drive at golf. Passengers on the Maunganui did not let Hr Bettington rest on the trip to New Zealand. Re captained the Victorian side in deck “ test ” cricket. This morning a popular exhibit on the vessel was a hottle containing the ashes, equally as mythical as those which make Englishmen and Australains so serious. The Mnunganui’s ashes were in a commonplace soda water bottle.
