NOT MURDER
INSPECTOR’S VIEWS. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. At the police inquiry, replying to the Commissioner, Inspector Hollis gave his theory of the case. He said .i*o thought the girl went away because sli(e was dissatisfied, and took umbrage at the arrival of her cousin. He thought, too, that she was responsib'e for the disappearance of certain articles from Bayly’s home, and had taken fright and possibly died of exhaustion. The Commissioner asked why Detec-tive-Sergeant Kelly was replaced. Witness said that, in view of the publicity given the case, it was desirable to have a fresh mind working on it. Chief Detective Hammond said that at 11 o’clock on tlie night of October sth. when he was off duty, he was rung up at home and told a woman’s body had been found and taken to the morgue. He told the Night Sergeant to leave things as they were until the morning. Early next morning witness telephoned the Coroner and arranged for a post mortem examination of the body. He examined the body himself. There was no mark on it to indicate the case of death. Witness sent detectives to make an examination of the ground. Later when he knew who deceased was, he sent for Frank Bnylv, her uncle. Bnyly waft strongly of the opinion that the girlhad driven the car and endeavoured to get home to Opotiki, but when she got to Rotorua, she missed the reads. Dr Gilmore informed witness that the result of the post mortem was that they could find no injury of any kind. Witness detailed subsequent investigations, saying the case had not merited tne large inquiry it received, because it was not murder ,nor did it have the elements of murder.
The commission adjourned till tomorrow.
