BREACH OF AWARD

GREYMOUTH, February 27. An action in which the Westland Timber Yards and Sawmills Industrial Co. Ltd., for breach of an award, was heard in the Magistrate’s Court:, yester- C day morning before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M. The breach was the admitted payment of wages made monthly to the employees at the mill at Mawlioraiti ,instead of fortnightly as required under the award. The S.AI. stated that the award made it clear that wages had to be paid fortnightly. The McAlpine Sawmilling Co3 T had carried on for many years ,and paid monthly. Tl% award was brought into operation on July 27th. 1928, and one of its terms stated clearly that wages were to be paid fortnightly. Under certain conditions steps were sometimes taken to pay monthly, hut no such steps were taken in this case. A breach of the award had been admitted by defendant'. Steps had to bo taken to see that the .‘ award was enforced. The case in question was not a matter for vindictive penalty. Judgement was given for plaintiff for £2, with costs £5 15s.
