LATE LOCALS.

In order to provide as much amusement as is possible for the visiting firemen, the Executive have decided to run another Ball in the Soldiers’ Hall to-niglit commencing at 8-45 p.m. The music wjili be supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra assisted hy several visiting musicians attending the Demonstrations. Prices Gents.—2s, Ladies Is. Firemen in uniform Free—Advt.

A further additional number of firemen, between 20 and 30, arrived by train last evening to take part in the demonstration proceedings commencing to-morrow, from various parts of the Dominion. A few of the delegates to the. Conference are returning homewards hy train to-morrow morning and about thirty oil Saturday morning. The main departture will l>e hy the special train on Monday morning.

At noon to-day nominations for the Wbstlaml Licensing Committee were received by the Returning Officer, Mr Cox. Tile five former members were the nominations received, and the gentlemen were declared duly elected. They are: Messrs F. McGregor (Hokitika), T. Cliesterman (Kanieri), Kyle Good all and Kent (Greymouth). The local bodies will thus be spared from footing a considerable bill of costs, as would be the case had there been a contested election for the seats.

The special function to-day in connection with the visit of members of the United Fire Brigades’ Association, was the monster picnic excursion by train to Lake Mnhinapua. The train left shortly before 10 o’clock, consisting of nineteen large carriages all well filled with visiting firemen, and townspeople, numbering about a thousand, mostly adults. The Municipal Band accompanied the excursion. The Ladies Committee had arranged for luncheon at the lakeside for the visitors, a very large party for attention. The day, which was threatening in the early morning, cleared before the train left and continued fine. The excursion train returns from the lake at 5.15 p.m., arriving about half an hour later.

A reminder is given of the Fire Brigade Queen Ball to be held in Woodstock on Friday evening. A bumper attendance is expected and arrangements are being made accordingly. Buses will be leaving the Town Clock at 8 p.tn. The event promises to Ire an outstanding success and all that requires is a large attendance.

The Member for Motueka, Mr G. C. Black, has received an important advice regarding mining development. The Hon W. A. Voitch telephoned to Air Black as follows: “In the month of November 1921, the late Government decided to limit the assistance for prospecting to those engaged m prospecting for gold. Recognising that this has, to some extent, hampered mining, the present Government has decided to extend the scope of the assistance for prospecting to include all minerals. Each application of course, is to be judged on its merits.*
