NEW LOCOMOTIVE
TRIAL RUN OF GARRATT ENGINE

Though the big articulated Garratt railway engine has been on the rails before, it received its first real trial run to-day. If left at 10.50 a.m. for Rackakariki. Particulars of the load and times recorded were not obtainable from the railway authorities, but it is understood that the run was satisfactory in every way.
Three of these engines have been manufactured for the New Zealand Railways, embodying the latest developments in this type of engine and though certain modifications have been necessary for a 3ft Gin gauge and the restricted height of the engine—, lift Gin from rail to level everything has been satisfactorily arranged. The engine is fitted with a mechanical stoker. These engines are intended to do away with the double heading and banking now necessary occasionally on steep grades. The chief mechanical engineer of the New Zealand Railways (Mr G. S. Lynde) accompanied the engine on its trial run.
