HAIDERS TACKLED. LONDON, Decomber 1!). A I ‘smash and grab” raid on n jeweller's shop window in Harrow-road Willesden, N.W., last night was marked hy the attempt of a young man to hold up four men in a ear who were engaged in the raid. At a few minutes before seven o’clock a man left a ear. in which were four other men. outside the shop of Mr Charles Cyril Winter, a pawnbroker and jeweller. He threw a brick through a window and seized a tray of diamond rings. The tray dropped irom his hands, and being unable to get il out he took two others in which there were about f>o wedding and signet rings, worth about £OO. A policeman, some distance away, heard the crash and ran to the shop, and while lie tripped the raider a young assistant in the shop, Edmund Williams. dashed out and jumped on the running hoard ot the car. which Ikc started. Williams was struck in the lace several times and fell to the ground. ITo injured his thigh and was taken to the hospital, where he was detained. Meanwhile the man who had been tripped had regained his feet, and, taking advantage of the fog. disappeared A number of the rings were found, nut about 37 are still missing.
