A NAVAL VISIT

On Saturday, Mr J. McLean, ( Iniir--1111111 of the Greymoiith Harbour Hoard, advised that in connection with the visit of the warships H.M.S. Dunedin and Diomede to Grey mouth roadstead next week, and the proposed entertainment of the visitors on shore, who will come ashore in batches of about 200, that it was contemplated arranging for a day to he spent at Hokitika il local arrangements for the entertainment <iO the men could he made. Mr .McLean added that the Greymoiith Harbour Board would defray the cost of the transport to Hokitika by train, if the local people would attend to the entertainment of the visitors.

Air .McLean was advised that would he done locally and a meeting will ho held to-morrow evening to set up committees to make the arrangements. Jt has been suggested that the entertainment should take the form of an assaiilt-at-arms 011 Cass Square, where

picnic luncheon would lie provided for

the sailormen by the townspeople, flic local facilities would enable what Is required to he carried out with a

iiininuim of trouble. For a sports pro-

gramme, the Boxing and Athletic Clubs arc being invited to arrange and stage a programme in which the visitors as well as local competitors could take part. Arrangements may also be

made for some of the officers and men to he taken out to Lake Ivanieri, or to other points of interest. The day of the visit is at present not settled, but it is expected to be either Friday, Bth March, or Saturday, 9th March. Whatever day is selected, however, it may be expected the townspeople will rise to the occasion, and make the naval visit of the British tars an outstanding event. The programme outlined has been submitted to Gioy-

nioutli, and will in turn be communicated to' the Officer Commanding the Squadron, and meantime with to-mor-row evening’s meeting, committees will proceed to finalise the arrangements.
