RELIEF WORK RATES
THE WELLS FORD TROUBLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WESTPORT, February 21. Mr 11. E. Holland. Leader of the l.ahour Party, lias received the following telegram from Sir Joseph Yard, in relation to the trouble over low rates of pay at Wellsford : “In further reply to your telegram of the 13th inst.. your correspondent omitted to mention that the one shilling per yard for clay on Main Highway at Wells!ord is the rate in cuttings over four feet high, and that extra price is paid for cuttings lour feet high and under, and that co-operative parties are paid lor lead in addition. The rates that Niro being paid are considered sufficient to enable men ol good average ability to earn the l i while Works standard rate of fourteen shillings per day, and I am informed that ether men in similarly priced co-opera-tive parties are earning standard wages.” 4
