BIG PEAT FIRE
HAURAKI PLANS FARMS THREATENED.
AUCKLAND, Feburay 19
In the Patetonga district a peat lire is burning similar to one that did such damage on the Hanraki Plains last summer. Sparks from a hush tire last Friday ignited the grass and peat on Mr E. .1. Mayn’s farm at Maukoro. Hundreds of acres had been burned by Sunday on a mile front. The wind is driving the flames through the dry grass and peat, and bands of settlers and others are making strenouus efforts to put the lire out. Drains have been dammed in order to flood the land, and trenches are being constructed to stay the spread of the flames. Back burning is also being carried out. Fears are entertained for adjoining farms, and the .Maukoro mills, with a large area of millable flax. The Hanraki Plains and Thames Valley is like a gigantic smoke screen, and the weather is extremely hot. Bush fires are in evidence in all directions.
