The death occurred at the Bulkw Hospital on .Saturday, of Mrs Ctaig. the wife of Mr J. C. Craig, the w-P known hairdresser of Westport. Deceased, who was a native of Fairdown, had been in the hospital for I,he past five weeks. She was 44 years of age, and is survived by her husband and a familv of four.
A strong south-west storm came cp over Christchurch on Sunday morning and blew with great .igour until late in the afternoon, it was accompanied bv little rain, but it I rouglil with it n coldness in the air that, seemed almost to usher in winter conditions. The storm subsided late in the afternoon, but the air remained cold all through the night.
Yesterday there appeared in our advertising columns notice of St. Mary’s CarmVal Bazaar to he opened at the close of this week in the Drill Hall. For months past work has been going .in in preparation for this event, and Vi~en the fair opens on Saturday the result of that work will he seen, when the stalls will be laden with good tilings ready for immediate sale. In conjunction with the Sale of Work, a Queen Carnival Competition is being run. and it is with nA little interest , at week after week the results of the Carnival are watched. However, the time limit is now very short to decidewho will he the winner, and no doubt interest will lie stimulated as the closing days draw near.
Next week will he occupied fully locally with the Fire Brigades’ Conference and Demonstration. The firemen arrive in force on Saturday next. On Sunday there will he a Church parade. Monday and Tuesday will he devoted to the conference of delegates from Now Zealand Fire Brigades. This will he held at the Town Hall. Wednesday is the “off” day of the week, and a monster picnic will lie hold at Lake Maliinapua. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday .the demonstration and competition will take place on Cass Square, events being in progress throughout the three days. Tn the evenings there will be various functions for the amusement and entertainment of the visitors, so that each night will have its s.poiia l attraction. The week should be a very busy one for the town as there will lie upwards of 100 visitors here for the week.

The State Collieries Floral and Horticultural Society held its ■ annual sweet pea show at Runanga on Saturday, when there avus a goixl attendance. The exhibits in every class were of a high standard, and-gave a, fair indication of the interest taken in horticulture by the residents of the, toAvnsliip. A feature of the show was the large and interesting entry by school children in the native flower section, no feAver ‘ ‘than elghty-ono i bouquets being staged, many boine , very well arranged. In the section the exhibits AA'ere and of a good class, the judge, Mr Robson, stating that the runner bean class contained, the best exhibits he \ had ever seen.

Fresh proposals are in hand in connection with tlie rebuilding of the Anglican Church which was to constitute a War Memorial from the congregation. It is understood theerigiiM idea of building at the corner of Stafford and Boa lev Streets, where already the foundation stone was laid, has been abandoned, and that in lieu the site of the. nresent church, will in the main b* ■adopted. The ground has been tejJjH as to foundations for a brick and .is said to be satisfactory. • are said to he in hand to carry out a modified scheme on a new design, ‘and tins matter is being gone into. The existing site is considered mere secluded lb rthe building and away,-from the traffic noises which are a growing quantity. The matter will be put before the parishioners at the annual meeting by which time fuller details are likely to be available, and it is hoped upon confirmation, to commence building operations during the year. A su.bs.antial sum of money is available for the work, so that progress with .the building scheme is not likely to he-de-layed unduly. •
