Mr T. A. .Johnston, District Engineer, has boon visiting works .under the Public Works Department in South Westland, during the week. The proposals for Little Wanganui river protection are being finalised, and will embrace more costly work than was at first intended. New plans are being prepared, and the additonal works will lie put in hand as soon as the details are settled. Just now there is a “learn to swim” movement pervading the Dominion. This fits in well with the visit of the lady champion swimmers here next Thursday, when they will give instruction to young girls, and in the evening participate in the Carnival to be held at tho municipal baths. It should be a gala night. The Band will parade for the occasion, and the lighting of the grounds will be augmented.

It is expected that the excursion to Lake Mahinapua on Wednesday week in connection with the visit, of the New Zealand liremon, will be on monster lines. An excursion train of twenty carriages will run from Groymouth, picking up wayside passengers also. The firemen will be the guests of tin* Demonstration Committee here, and the public will be expected to see to their own catering in advance. The outing should see one of the largest gatherings yet assembled at Lake Mahinapua. A public meeting will be held in the Town Hall on Tuesday, Fob. 19th. at 8 p.m. with the object of forming a committee to help carry out Red Cross peace-time work in the district. Sister 1). M.
