A CLOSE CALL. FOR FEDERAL GOYERNM ENT. (Australian Press Association) CANBERRA, Fob. 14. The Federal Government narrowly escaped a defeat on the motion by Mr Coleman (Labour) for the printing of '•ertain. determinations by the Public Service Arbitrator, to which the Lender ol the Senate had given notice of intention to move disapproval. The ellect -of Senator Coleman’s motion amounted to censure on the Government, and it was defeated only by 36 to 35. with the Sneaker’s casting vote. Four Ministerialists were absent, and Messrs Hughes and Mann (Nationalists) and Stewart and McWilliams (Independents) voted against the Government. A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. SYDNEY. Feb. 14. Damage estimated at £IO.OOO was caused by a lire, which destroyed a large- furniture factory in the suburb of Annandale. After a tense struggle the firemen were successful in saving the public school nearby. TIMBER BURNING. MEDBOURNE. Feb. 14, Incendiarism, it is feared, is the cause of a fire whirl) destroyed two thousand feet of timber stacked on the wharf, which the carriers .and drivers refused to handle. At one time adjacent stacks containing a million feet were threatened.
