EXPORT OF APPLES
ENQUIRY FROM GERAI ANY
AUCKLAND, Feb. 10,
Orchardists are anticipating a record season for apples in the Auckland district this year. Faced with a croj which, from tbe point of view ol quality as well as quantity, will unquestionably surpass those of preceding years, growers are making earnest endeavours to dispose of their produce to better advantage in overseas markets. Last season Auckland placed 54.007 eases with foreign buyers, chiefly Great Britain and South America. This yea; the marketing arrangements are being based on estimated exportation o 1 100,000 cases. Interesting negotiations are at present proceeding for the creation of a new market for New Zealand apples in Germany-. Keen enquiry is being made by Hamburg merchants for a supply approximating 15,000 cases of the larger varieties of fruit, particularly Monros. The offer is based on a price of 15s per case, c.i.f. Hamburg, which is equivalent to 9s a case in New Zealand, compared with an average price of os 3d received for export apples last season. Should suitable arrangements be made by the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation re' garding payment guarantees, it is probable that the order will he divided between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay for the supply of the German requirements. Offers have also been received from Copenhagen, but the terms are not considered as favourable as the Hamburg proposition.
There is every reason for believing that both Great Britain and South America will take larger consignment:than hitherto.
