BOWLING
WEST COAST BOWLING TOURNAMENT. Play yesterday, the second day of the tournament was continued on the Hokitika green under very pleasant conditions. The rain of the night before was not sufficient to affect the green, which played equally'as well as on the first day. There was a light mist for five minutes about 9 a, ill,, but that cleared away and the rest or tbe day was ideal for bowling, it being line without any hot sun, and particularly pleasant for play. '.I he three rounds were completed in due course well on time, and the best' or good bowling feeling was bubbling over throughout the day players Having a most enjoyable time. Tile record of two teams of the previous day going through without a defeat, was not continued, there being many upsets of expectations. The linish of tiie day’s play gave the most exciting incident of the dav.
The question of whether there would He any sectional ties to play off was left in abeyance, till the last. "When all the other teams had finished two secs were playing out the last two heads and on the question of winners rested whether a tie play-off would be required in the two sections. In Section A. Truscott and Ives were fighting out a hard finish, the former having an advantage which Ives nearly overtook. A win for Ives would have given him five wins and'he would have tied with Benjamin, who bad five wins and one loss. Truscott. however, managed to bold bis load and Section A went to Benjamin as winner. In the other game, J. L. Morgan (Edgeware) when the last head was entered on had a load of six from Wilkinson (Beckenham). It looked a certainty for Morgan securing the win, but Wilkinson, in an attempt to score heavily burnt the head and another kitty had to be thrown. On this occasion Morgan’s team failed him and Wilkinson, with one ball in the ditch, secured six counters, and the seventh very close to a count. This made the score level, and in tbe play-off Wilkinson managed to secure a win by one point and Morgan secured only four wins, leaving Stevenson (Hokitika) as tbe Section B winner with five wins also, lie having suffered a. defeat in the last game of tbe day. There was therefore no play-offs necessary for the pink competition. The finals between the two section winners on the Hokitika green and the two frefcn tbe Greymoutli green (Messrs Brebner, Greymouth and Main, Beckenham) will be played on Friday.
Throughout the day 'there were crowds of interested spectators, the scene being a very animated and interesting one. The arrangements of the Tournament Committee were complete and play proceeded in a very happy manner throughout, and the day’s play finished at 6.15 p.m. after a very interesting finish to the two games men. tioned above. The ladies’ committee had again a very large circle to attend to, but they managed their task in a manner that was satisfying to every one concerned, the arrangements generally being very complete, and highly to be commended. The following is tbe result of the sixth round.
