THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
The Tamakj Tkaukdy. In view of the now notorious facts of the Elsie Walker ease, and the remarks made by the coroner in giving bis verdict at the inquest, the decision ol the -Minister of Justice to hold a public inquiry into the conduct of the police force in this matter will command general approval. Quite apart from faults of omission or commission that might be credited to detectives and police officers the long delays that marked their investigations tended not • only to nullify the value of tlioir work, •ut to produce in the public mind aii excusable and natural sense of -- faction and insecurity which can best lie dispelled by a public inquiry open to the Press and conducted on the lines indicated; by the Hon T. M. Wilford. It is not unlikely that the staff is inadequate for the amount of work that has to be done, and if this is so- the fact .should be known, when the public can insist on the position being remedied. —A uckland Star.
