MAILS TAMPERED WITH
ON FERRY STEAMER. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 11. shortly after the arrival of the ferry .steamer Waliine from Lyttelton yesterday morning, it was discovered a number of bags of mail had been tampered with. It is unde "stood some thirty or forty hugs are concerned. The Secretary-General of the Post Office advises that some mails received from the South Island by the s.s. Waliine yesterday morning, were found on discharge from the vessel to have been pillaged. Approximately forty bags were opened and portion of the registered con-iibstra'-ted from them. Full details of the losses are not yet available, but- it is known the registermi contents of the bags from various parts of the South Lsnnd have been stolen. There is no suggestion that nonrogistered letters have been interfered with. Tlio matter is being inquired into by the police.
