HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY Bth. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present:— Dr Teichelinann (in the chair). Messrs T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, D. J. Evans, and J. King. The minutes were confirmed and out ward correspondence approved. INWARD COR DESPONDENCE. From District Engineer, Public Works, Groymouth, advising conditions under which. Government is prepared to approve oi and pay subsidies to Local Bodies for the relief of unemployment. —Received. From Under - Secretary, Internal Affairs, Wellington, acknowledging receipt of names of gentlemen elected as representatives on Hokitika Fire Board for ensuing term.—Received. From Secretary, Blackball Picnri Committeo, approving of alteration of picnic date from the 13th to the 11th i n s ta i it.—R ece i ved. From W. Wilson, Agent for Lucas and Robertson, in reply to notice under Health Act to effect repairs to house on Section 358, Bealev Street, and asking that matter he held over, as owner has decided to sell the property, or the house for removal.—Received. From Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, notification of case of diphtheria .—R e reived. From Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, directing that notice he served on owner of Section 144 to effect repairs to building. —Received. From Afedieal Officer of Health, Christchurch, pointing out that in respect to Air A.. J. Thompson’s application for permission to install a septic tank, that although the Drainage and Plumbing Regulations are now applicable to Hokitika. Borough, they cannot actually apply to drainage in general, as Council has not provided a sewerage scheme within the Borough; the drains which at present exist being merely storm-water drains; and further, that the Director-General of Health had ruled that septic tanks were not to lie agreed to, on the ground that it was likely to defeat the installing of a sewerage scheme within the borough.—Received ; referred to Inspector. From Returning Officer for the Westland Licensing District, intimating that Tuesday, the 12th March, proximo, is the statutory day for the election oi Licensing Committee, and forwarding a copy of list of polling places for approval, and also asking the Council to fix the rate of payment of Deputy Returning Officers and PolJ Clerks. —Received ; left to Town Clerk for atten tion. From District Land Registrar, intimating that a title to Section 682, town of Hokitika., C.f. 30-285, has now been issued, and may he uplifted on payment of £1 ss.—Received; referred, to Treasurer with power to act. From W. Good fellow, applying for permission to erect a verandah at corner of Hamilton and Tailored Sts.~ Received and request granted. Accounts amounting to £SO 4s 10d were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported receipts £Bb Is 2d; payments £1314 2s 2d; credit balance £240 12s lid.—Received. FOREMAN’S REPORT. 1 beg to report the following work was carried out during the month. Drainage connections were put in at the following places: W. Marks in Hampden Street. Airs Bruhn’s corner of Healey and Stafford Streets, and A. Thompson's in Hall Street-. A down pipe was put in at the corner of Tailored and Camp Streets. The well in front of the Town Hall caved in. This was repaired and the cover raised. A crossing was put in to At. Houston’s in AVharf Street. A culvert on the North Town Belt was repaired. Water connections were put in at Cali-at-i’s in Re veil Street and Al.r Black s in Hampden Street. The growth was cut in Fitzherhert Street between Tudor Street and the bottom of Cemetery Hill, in Stafford Street in front of the Gas Works, and in Sale Street between Weld and Hampden Streets, also in Rolleston Street between Weld Street and the Quay. A new pipe was put in in Sale Street main between Stafford and Hampden Streets. The pipes in Tucker Flat hurst twice during the month on the 9th and on Sunday, 27th. The latter two weeks of the month were spent in laying about tliioe chains of pipes in Cass Square and repairing those already there. An extra relief valve was also put in. This will be thoroughly tested later on for the Eire Brigade demonstrations. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 3ft 6in. —Received. From Manager, Abattoirs, (J. Jarman') reporting for January there were examined: —27 cows, 29 heifers, 52 bullocks, 259 sheep, 62 lambs, 7 pigs, 12 calves. Fees for month £6B 12s (same period last year £7O Is).—Received. It was mentioned that there were no bad debts incurred at the Abattoirs. Air Heenan drew attention to the unsightly condition of Stafford Street between Sewell Street and Revel 1 Street and in Tailored Street and asked that the work he carried out. A motion that the work bo put in hand at 'once was agreed to on the motion of Messrs Heenan and Duff; and also the section of footpath, between Stafford and A\ eld Street in Healey Street. Tt was resolved to ask the District Engineer for the use oi the road scarifier for a few days to effect repairs to the Main Highway east of Rolleston Street. The Council rose at 8.10 p.m.
