A tender for Hie longest- stretell o! highway reconstruction in tiie history of New Zealand —M V miles ol bituniin ous concrete —has lieen accepted hv the AVaiinate County Council. The outlay involved, £.‘18,000. presents a striking contrast to the cost oi works lece'ntJy constructed in and. round Christchurch. Allowing for the 'lact that the AVaimate paving will he thinner than those around Christchurch, it would have cost, under the system of letting small, contracts, troin C 50.000 to £75.000, according to the type of construction. JKroni this the economy of construction in large sections is apparent. The. contractors, the Xenchatel Asphalt Company, are giving a five year’s guarantee, which means a further saving in maintenance charges. This will he the first bituminous concrete road in Canterbury to he constructed solely of British materials.
