SECRET OF HOLY RELICS
BERLIN, December 13. 'l’lirec of the greatest treasures o'! Russia have been saved from the Bolsheviks and are now in the keeping of tile Russian bishop who lives in Berlin. These treasures were brought to Denmark and given to the late Empress -Marie, and it will probably never l>e known how they were got out of Russia. They consist of a. piece of wood believed to have been part oif the true Cross, in a shrine of gold and jewels; an arm of a saint—said to have been that ol St. John the Baptist—in a golden shrine; and an ikon (image) ot Our Lady and the Divine Child encased ill gold and jewels, and painted, according to tradition, bv Saint Luke. “These treasures,” said Bishop Tikhon to-day, “were brought to Russia by the Knights of Malta. They were given to the Imperial Family and kept at the Winter Palace; but each October they were taken to the cathedral at Gatchina. They were not in the place when it was seized by the Bolsheviks.” Idle bishop, told me that 70 former Russian officers have formed a bodyguard for the relics, and every night three of them keep watch over them in the Russian church here.
