GOVER NAIENT BILLS. (United Press Association.—By Electric 'Telegraph.—Copyright.) CANBERRA, Feb. 6. The Commonwealth Parliament opened to-day. J lie Governor General’s speech set out that the Government proposes to eon vine an inter-Stale conference for tile purpose of discussing transport, social legislation, unemployment, health matters, the development of power resources, mid tl.e unification of railway gauges. The speech stated the Government will consider financial provisions in order to give effect to the recommendations of Sir John Salmon on air defence. A Bill will be presented to Parliament providing for a comprehensive scheme of national insurance against sickness, invalidity and death. A Bill to repeal the coastal clauses of the Navigation Act will be submitted. providing that, in lieu thereof, protection shall be given through tariff provisions to vessels complying with the Australian standards and living conditions. The Government also intends to give consideration to providing financial assistance for certain States. Sir Littleton Groom lias been i looted Speaker of the House of Representatives. Air J. Seullin. Leader of the Labour Party, made feeling reference to the restoration of His (Majesty the King to health. Parliament then adjourned till tomorrow. This Parliament was the first Parliament opened in the new capital. The former ceremony was performed by the Duke of York in 1927, marking the opening of the building.
