DISASTROUS FIRE

FORTY BUILDINGS BURNED. JN TOWN OF COONAMBLE. (Australian Press Association). (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 7. A Coonnmble message states in one of the most disastrous fires the west has known, thirty-six stores, two banks and two hotels in the main street, were gutted. Fanned by a fierce wind the fire was still raging at a late hour last night. ' Every available person was engaged carrying sick people from beds in threatened houses and chopping down premises to make fire breaks and carrying water. It is impossible to estimate the damage, with any degree of accuracy, but it is thought it will amount to £200,000. Owing to the strong wind the firemen were powerless to subdue the flames. They concentrated on preventing the fire spreading. A fortunate change in the wind saved adjoining blocks from destruction.
