VALUELESS CHEQUES. (By Telegraph—Press Association). , HAMILTON, Feh. 6. Magistrate Wilson, in committing George Thomas Nelson for sentence for passing three valueless cheques, remarked on the surprising readiness of business men to' accept cheques from strangers. The accused, who is now serving a term in Auckland for offences at Wanganui, had bought a £35 diamond ring from a Hamilton jeweller, tendering several £5 notes, and remarking: “I have not quite enough cash. Will you accept a cheque?” A clothier had accepted a cheque lor £4 10s, and a storekeeper had cashed one for £9. Nelson pleaded guilty. SEXUAL Case. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 6. At the Police Court to-day, James Barton, charged with carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16 years, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. A plea of not guilty was entered. FAILURE TO KEEP PROPER. BOOKS. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 6. Alexander George Voungson, a bricklayer. and an adjudged bankrupt, was charged with failing to keep proper books in connecton with his business. Accused pleaded guilty, It was stated that he had not kept any books, although he had been in business for six years. Counsel for Youngson said be hail gone into business on his own without the necessary training, and although he had not kept books, there was no suggestion of fraud. The Magistrate said he could not agree to probation. He convicted and sentenced Youngson to 11 days’ imprisonment.
