New decrees signed hv King Alfonso invested General de Rivera with the widest powers to deal with political opponents. A special police department is created to keep Ministers informed of matters affecting the safety of the State. Extraordinary powers are taken for the dismissal and replacement of any officials showing hostility to the Government. A scmi-oliieial character is given to strong political organisations of citizens. which have been co-operating with the Government, known as the Patriotic Union, by the creation of centres of investigation and intelligence. The Patriotic Union will collaborate with the authorities in maintaining public order.
