SOLD AT CHRIST MTS. (liy Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Fell. 4. Airs Lushington was the owner ol the valuable pictures recently sold at Christie’s, in London. She is aged S 3, and is now living at Auckland. Her liusband. tlie. late Mr C. Tl. Lushington,. the scion of an old Kent family, came to New Zealand in 1882, and took up property at East Taniake. Among Ids belongings were a number of pictures, including those just sold at Christie’s. They had been in the. Lushington family for a long time, ■ii’d ' h*■ ir value was quite a puree in ted and understood. During the time that the Lushiactons lived at Tarnaki their wooden house very nearly caught fire, as l! e result of the burning of a nearby liable. Shortly afterwards they movi d to Maliurangi Heads, where their bouse was a concrete one, and the ••aluahle pictures were felt to be much safer. Jn 1923, Mrs Liisliingfon sent the Van Ruisdael picture to London. but it failed to reach the reserve of 800 guineas and it was sent back. This is the one that has now been sold for 3000 guineas. When, a year back, Airs Lushineton came to Auckland to live, she did not like the idea of risking the pictures again in a wooden house, and so she decided to send the greater P«rt °f her collection to London for sale. She dispatched over 30 pictures.
