SIR JOSEPH WARD A STOUT

WELLINGTON, February 1
What he believes the completion of the South Island main trunk railwaywill mean to Wellington was outlined by the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) to a deputation to-day. The work when completed, said Sir Joseph Ward, would bring the people of Marlborough, of the West Coast, of Canterbury, and even farther south, six and a half hours closer to Wellington than they were to-day, and also 6.i hours nearer Auckland. Ihe Prime Minister ■ predicted a large accession of visitors to the capital city, and the introduction of trade and employment to a much greater extent than even through the completion of the route. “The more of these avonuc-s you have the hotter it must he for labour.” lie said.
BRIDGE ACROSS WAITEMATA
AUCKLAND, February 1
The Hon. Air Cobbe discussed a scheme for n harbour bridge across the Waitomata, within the inner harbour, with a large deputation. He said that lie would discuss the proposal with the Hon. Mr Ransom. His own opinion favoured a conference or a Departmental enquiry.
