Another was added to this season's lists of successful clinihs in the Southern Alps, when Mr Jackson, of Wellington College, with Guide L. Mahan, made an ascent of the Footstool (9273 ft.) Mt. Cook on Sunday last. The climbers, judging*'the weather to he promising left the Hermitage late on Saturday afternoon, making the Sefton Bivouac that evening. They set out from there in the small hours of Sunday morning. The snow was in excellent condition for crampons so that no time was last, in kicking steps. The loose rock ridge caused a small amount of difficulty but not sufficient to prevent the mountaineers from reaching the summit in good time. Thanks to the clear atmosphere the West Coast presented a sweeping view and even the waves of the Tasman Sea were distinguishable as they brokb on the shore. .
