A message from Mr Hoover to Mr Coolklge endorsing the President’s naval views and denying statements inferring to the contrary was read to the Senate to-day by Chairman Hale of the Senate Naval Committee. SENATE DISCUSSION. WASHINGTON, Jan. 28. Senator Thomas Walsh, Democrat for Montana, in the Senate to-day said that supporters of the Cruiser Bill had in mind the possibility of war with Britain or Japan. No one had indicated that the navy as it stood, was inadequate to meet the results of controversies with any other country. He opposed tfie Bill because lie believed it would interfere with any attempt by United States to obtain further curbing of the naval programme. He said he was wedded to the idea of a parity with Britain, but he preferred it to be obtained by scaling down. He added that the sponsors of the Bill wore no less attached to the cause of peace than the rest of us. Not a few take the View that the defeat of the Bill would encourage the belief that there was no purpose on the part of United States in any extent to build. aeroplane base. WASHINGTON, Jan. 28. Mr Willing recommends Congress to create a live million dollar naval aeroplane base on the Pacific coast, starting work with an initial appropriation of two million. He said the completion of two large rigid airships for which contracts had been let, would necessitate increased housing facilities, and if such facilities were not provided within lour years, the contract for one airship would have to be cancelled.
