The witnesses in the Goddard case for the defence igave evidence that they had been associated with Sergeant Goddard in the song business, from which there was £SOOO profit in 1922. A commission agent gave evidence that from 1922 to 1926 Sergeant Goddard made frequent bets and had his winning and also his losing days, hut he appeared to he well informed. He always received his winnings in pound notes.

Ribufui entered the witness box. He denied that he paid any money to Goddard directly or indirectly. He could not account for the notes traced to Goddard from him, beyond saying that he had lost money heavily at cards. Others might have changed notes for Goddard.

Giving evidence himself, Goddard admitted that lie had done business with bookmakers, after arresting them for betting offences. He also admitted an investment in Wembley rock stalls, contrary to the service regulations. Goddardsaid his total profits from, betting, Wembley and foreign exchange speculations 'amounted to £20,000. Goddard’s cross-examination by Mr Porcival Clarke lasted for four hours. Coakley, Goddard’s partner in the Wembley speculation, gave evidence that the joint profits for 1924-25 were jjooOO. The .profit worked out at tenpence in the shilling. The case was adjourned till Monday.
