SHARK ATTACK.
YOUTH’S SHOCKING INJURIES
DEATH ENDS SUFFERING
(Australian Press Association)
(Received this day at 11.25. a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 28.
A Townsville message states: Bathing in four feet of water at Arcadia Bay, Henry Wethercll, aged 20, the son of the Manager of the New Zealand. Loan and Mercantile Agency, was attacked by a. large shark. Wetherell was bathing further out than the others, when the monster appeared and tore off his arm.
A dozen bathers rushed to his rescue but V ethcrell waved them back shouting: “One is enough for it to get.” Then ensured a desperate struggle during which the sea monster tore off his other hand and inflicted other hideous injuries.
Wetherell eventually managed to reach the shore, where a nurse helped to staunch the bleeding. He was raced in a pilot ship to Townsville Hospital, three miles away. He suffered inexpressible agony ’ without complaint for an hour Until an operation was performed.
His parents failed to reach his bedside before the youth lapsed into unconsciousness, which ended in death. This is the first tragedy of the kind known at Townsville, where thousands bathe all the year in what are known as shark infested waters.
