TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE FINALS REACHED

The West Coast Tennis Championships wore concluded at Gveymouth on Saturday in perfect weather. The members of the Williams lamily (former residents of Hokitika) proved successful in all events. T. S. Williams winning the singles championship and with McCarthy the doubles, and with his sister Miss Marie M illiams the combined doubles, while the latter also won the ladies’ doubles with her sister Margaret and also the ladies’ championship. 'l’lie final df the Men’s Doubles provided the best match of the day. AY illiams and McCarthy took the first set. and the second went to their opponents Mooch and Partridge. In the deciding ,-ot Gooch and Partridge led 4-1, and increased their lead to 5-2, setting n seemingly impossible task for tlicii opponents to gain the honours. But the unexpected happened, and Williams •,nd McCarthy, playing finished games ■ind taking advantage of the other pair’s mistakes, ran out winners 8-0. McCarthy was erratic in the second set, and did not appear at ease until well into the third set, when lie came to light. His lobbing in the closing stages was undoubtedly a big factor in -the winning of the game, for lie had both Gooch and Partridge puzzled. The latter, however, with a share ot luck might easily have won the day, as at times both reached great heights, their net play being especially good.
