LINER BATTLING TO RESCUE

NEW YORK. January 22

The liner America, commanded by Captain George Fried, who is the hero of many rescues, is battling in mountainous seas in an endeavour to reach sinking ships which called for aid this afternoon.

The Italian freighter, Florida, which is without a rudder and is 'otherwise disabled, and the American tanker Danncdnike are in distress in tremendous seas. Both are situated about To!) miles oil' Norfolk. Virginia. The Florida lias a crew of 42. and the Danncdnike 40. Sea coast broad asi ing has been siboued and every attempt is being made to reach the vessels.

The America is nble.to make only s speed of It) knots in the westerly gale. Other ships, notably the liner President Harrison, are also held up by the severe weather. it is believed that the America cannot reach the ships much before 40 hours, although the President Harrison may he slightly nearer. The Danncdaike emitted particulars. She simply advised that she needed immediate assistance.

The British freighter Truss),ridge is if eared to have been lost off llalil ax. No word has been heard from her since yesterday, when she reported that she was ill distress. The steamer Maine and other ships are continuing the searcli. however.

all lifeboats shattered.

Virtually all hope has been given up for the recovery of flu* 'I res: bridge, although two ships will continue to search.

The America. President Harrison, and the German freighter Yorek are approaching the Florida and Dannedaike. the lifeboats of which were all apparently shattered hv the seas. The crews of the vessels are unable to do more than keep as much water out e'f the bottoms as is possible. In the event of the rescuers arriving on the scene ' to-night ii is probable that they can do little until morning, because of the weather. The condition of the stricken vessel is not known definitely.
