SKELETON FOUND

NO CLUE TO IDENTITY,

AUCKLAND, Jan. 22

The skeleton of a- man was discovered yesterday in some rushes on Mr Ernest Taylor’s farm at the corner of the AVaiuku-Drury road. The skeleton had evidently been there for a year or more. Deceased had been wearing a. tweed suit of dark. grey and green mixture, a dark grey felt hat, with black band, and boots size nine. Nearby was found an old tobacco tin with a£l note and a 10s note in it. In another tin there-was a small quantity of tobacco. A conib, toothbrush, pipe, and pocket compass were also found. There was a small bottle, the contents of which are to be analysed. There were no papers or anything that would definitely establish identity.

Harry Vincent, of /3 Artluii s Road, Christchurch, was brought into the Southland Hospital this afternoon from Lumsden, suffering from a bullet wound in the bead. His condition is critical.

A report lias been received that Colonel J. W. Hutclien, seer- i.u-v to the Administration in the mandated territory. of Western Samoa, has tendered has resignation, to take effect immediately. .

Colonel Hutclien was born in AA ollington, and educated at Wellington College. He served in the war and prior to bis appointment at Samoa in 1920, was staff paymaster at the. headquarters of the Now Zealand Division in London. The search for the body of Mi S. Rinaldi who was drowned at the Pines Beach, Ivaiapoi, has been continued along tlie bench northwards as far as Woodcnd, and to the south to North Beach, while the beach in the vicinity of the fatality has been patrolled at every tide. So far the finding of n belt,* supposed to have been worn by the deceased, lias been the only result, As a result of tlie fatality, arrangements are being made for the purchase of a life-saving reel to be installed at tlie beach. An effort- is being made to defray the cost by public subscription, and The Pines Beach Association have made’ a donation of £lO towards the fund.
