DRY LAW ENFORCEMENT.

The United States Senate has adopted Senator Harris’s amendment t« the first Deficiency Appropriation Bill, giving additional twenty-four millions dollars for prohibition enforcement, despite the United States Treasurer, Air Alellon’s protest that above thirteen million dollars has previously been appropriated for the purpose. The Senate then adopted a further amendment giving to Air Hoover, the President-Elect, a vote of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for an investigation into prohibition reinforcement. Both of these measures must now be passed by the House of Representatives.

The State Department, through the United States diplomatic representatives abroad, lias to-day invited the Governments of the world to send >representatives to the sixth session';,of the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses to be held in Washington in October, 1930. The session is to consider the ,of research in all phases of highway velopment.

The Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr Maleorn, gives a definite assurance that- if more vessel space ; is required for shipment to the Antipodes, the Government will provide itA thorough investigation is being made regarding a steamship service between the Pacific coast and Australia, preparatory to recommendations to Cabinet. A conflict of opinion exists between shippers and steamship owners on tile adequacy of the present space.
