WAIROA, Jan. 23

A fire at midnight totally destroyed Whitehead Homestead, Maliia Road, Morere. Only a piano was saved. Insurances arc not available.

PRISONER SUICIDES,

HANGS IN GAOL CELL

AUCKLAND, January 23

A Maori labourer, Manuel Wilson, aged 29, who was arrested on New Year’s Eve on a - charge of breaking, entering and theft at the Farmers’ Trading Company, Tuakau, committed suicide in his cell at Mount Eden gaol this morning. He had been in gaol .on remand since January Ist- and since had been frequently remanded. He was given his breakfast at 6.30 a.m. when lie appeared normal. When the cell was visited at 1.30 it was found he had hanged himself with a towel. On the night when it was alleged that deceased broke into the store at Tuakau, the store caught fire, 'following an explosion early in the morning oA)occiiiber 30th. The damage was estimated at £IO,OOO to £12,000.

GAMING ACT,

SIX ARRESTS

CHRISTCHURCH, January 23

Six people were arrested this morning on charges of breaches of the Gaming Act. A detective force paid simultaneous visits to live premises, four being hotels. Those arrested were: Eunice Brown, otherwise Miss Hobbs, a barmaid, aged 42, Herbert George Taylor, William Stanfon Murray, Edward Best McCleary, William Frederick Kiddev, a barman, aged 58, of 73 I’oulson Street, and Frederick Alfred Fox. a barman, aged 53. All were admitted to hail, the cases being adjourned till Tuesday.
