Tim progress ol (I s>i ryinij; in this district is well in|>1 ilicsl by the continued success and steady growth of the AVcstland Cool Storage and Dairy Coy. Ltd. At tlio animal meeting this week gratification was expressed with the increase in business, while tin* result ol the year’s operations showed to advantage. The Company gives its suppliers special services, and tin l central situation ol the concern is a factor in its popularity. Although there may be certain objections to centralisation in exceptional cases centralisation in dairying operations do appear to be very profitable where carried into effect. That is. the consumers reap the advantage by the saving in overhead expenses, the bulk ol which cost is saved for the suppliers. This is. perhaps, a twice told tale, but it i.s worth repeating. and the truism will in time come home to those who mainly for sentimental reasons like to retain the prestige of their own factory to their own district. The financial position, however. is worth conning over, and one immediate effect through the more economical working ot a larger turnover, would lie a larger surplus to swell the bonus to suppliers. With so commodious a factory as is centralised here. I lie stage is well set for the settlers to help themselves in this matter when 1 hev feel so disposed to do so. Such being die ease cent ralisat inn will come in time. The proposal mooted to osi'dilis!] a bacon factory here is possible of accomplishment iiecnuse there is the foundation for the venture in the wellc'fpiipped centra! factory established here already. The freezing machinery is there, and the ground necessary for any buildings is adjacent, file venture
could he launched on a very modest capital, and seeing that pig prices would at once advance and he .stabilised, it seems to he in the interests of those concerned in pig rearing to join up. in the venture. The local factory being .so bandy to the public abattoirs is another reason to assure the practicability of the undertaking if the settlers show the desired enterprise. Altogether, therefore, the Central factory seems destined to do the district further good service. The convenience of local butler, cream and ice supplies is of advantage to the town, and the factory in itself growing as it is, is an institution in every way creditable to the place.
