BRIBERY CHARGES.

MRS MEYRICK. GODDARD’S MONEY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). {Received this clay at 11.25. a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. The trial has begun of the former Police Sergeant. Goddard, of Luigi Ribufli. and of Mrs .Meyrick. on bribery charges. All pleach'd guilty. Justice Avory refused the application of Mrs Meyrick to be separately tried. Counsel for the prosecution, In a lengthy review, said cx-Sergcant Goddard bad been for twenty-six years in the force on pay of CG weekly. When requested to account for the possession of money, freehold house, and saloon motor car lie replied that he had saved a few hundred, as well as taking advantage of reliable information for racehorses and foreign exchange.

The police traced money in various banks in Goddard’s as well as large denomination of' hank notes in two safe deposits, the- whole amounting to £17,904. Many of the notes were traced as having been paid to Goddard from people in the position of Mrs Meyrick and Nibuffi, in addition to the keeper of a Soho disorderly house, who since had disappeared from the country.

The prosecution referring to Mrs Mevrick, said an anonymous letter addressed to Scotland Yard asked why “The notorious Mevrick is permitted to run three night dubs without police interference. These places arc disgusting sinks ol iniquity whole young men arc filled with drink, robbed and petted 'by street women.’ ■ Goddard’s report thereon set out approximately seventy women lesorted to the establishment nightly. Many were known to be undesirables but he was satisfied the place was not used habitually as one of ill fame. Women attach themselves to males who bu\ chocolates, the wholesale price of which is two to three shillings, but which are retailed from 25s to 30s at the Club.

Goddard’s report concluded—“ These are insidious, lying unfounded allegations against the police.’ The case was adjourned.
