REARING TIGER CUBS
PLUNKET PRINCIPLES ADOI’TE'D. AUCKLAND, Jan. ‘2O. The two tiger cubs recently horn at the Zoo have been taken away from their mother and are being reared on the Plunket system, said the Town Clerk, Mr J. S. Brigham. The two youngsters are flourishing on tile aitificial feeding, which makes an interesting study. These precautionary measures are being taken as six months ago the tigress killed and ate her cub, and it is recognised that jungle animals do not prove good mothers in captivity. The Zoological Park staff are being kept busy attending to their new charges. Until her young were taken from her the tigress showed complete indifference towards them. Now that a separation has been effected, however, her interest has been renewed. The cubs are progressing remarkably well in their new environment and under the system of feeding prescribed for them, and although they have not yet opened their eyes, they are capable of really threatening growls.
