A dispatch says thirteen Anglican Bishops, also leading divines of other churches have disowned Dean Inge. They recall a passage in the Dean's book offending America saying: “European nations in certain contingencies might combine to draw Shyloek’s teeth.” The clergy point out that sii; American. Senator Robinson, expressed tin* opinion that Dean Inge correctly interpreted feelings of the great mass of English people. The signatories, including Bishop of Durham ano Archbishop c.if Liverpool, declare: “Tlie passage. does not represent our views, and in our opinion does not represent the views of any number of Englishmen.” A PROTEST. (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.) LONDON. January 20. Fifteen Anglican Bishops and heads of 'Non-Conformist and Presbyterian Churches signed a disclaimer oil' the passage in Dean Inge’s hook "England ”: “ If the British Hag were hauled down in North America possibly the nations of Europe, enraged by bloated prosperity and airs of superiority oi the man who won the war, would com bine to draw Shvlook’s teeth. Britain having lost Canada would 110 longer have a motive to help the nation which, under the circumstances, would have forfeited her friendship.” The signatories protest against the suggestion in tlie American Senate that the passage correctly interprotated the English peoples feelings and Dean Inge’s opinion does not represent the views of any considerable number.
