STRANDED ZINGARA

The work yesterday afternoon did not have any satisfactory results in connection with the stranding of the Zingara on the .south beach. The effort to haul the vessel off failed and the hawser round the end of the south wall to the north wall parting assisted in the failure. There was a considerable sea, and this caused the vessel to surge considerably and assisted to strain the stranded vessel, which last night was reported to lie making a considerable amount of water, the position not being nearly so satisfactory as it was the previous day. Every possible effort had been made with the means at disposal, hut the conditions continued to get worse and hopes <>l a satisfactory ending to the misadventure steadily got less. Captain Arch. McArthur who is in charge of the vessel has been untiring in his efforts since the stranding and together with the crew have had a veryhard and trying experience. All have done their utmost for the welfare ol the vessel. Yesterday .Mr \Y. Rodgers, general manager of the Anchor S.S. Company' and Captain Walstin visited Hokitika and offered to render any assistance possible, stating the s.s. Orepuki would lie sent down at once to assist in towing the Zingara off. (‘apt. McArthur was unable to avail himself of the offer, stating the Zingara was not tight enough, and could not he towed seaward in her present condition. The offer, however, was deeply appreciated by (’apt. McArthur and all concerned.
