CIVIC' COMMISSION’S REPORT SYDNEY, Jnn. 17. Tlie Civic- Commissioners who supplanted the Sydney City Council, submitted mi annual report to-night. They point out that the Council staff which was originally 2.742, was reduced to 2000 by last September. The retrenchment was rendered necessary by the payment of retiring and compassionate allowances, aggregating £27,000. The full effect of staff reduction would not lie felt until next year. The Commissioners estimate that there will be a deficit of about £50,000 on the year’s operations. Nearly half a. million sterling was spent last year on street improvement, street widening. park improvement, and slum eradication. The only unwelcome note in the report is the prediction that electricity charges are likely to be increased.
