The contest between New South Wales and Victoria for the right oi holding the Sayonara Cup commenced to-day, when the lirst heat ol live was held off Sydney heads. Tile course was ten miles to windward and return. The competing yachts were: P. S. Arnolt’s Vanessa (New South Wales defender of the trophy) and L. Randersou’s, Emilia mara (Victoria) the challenger. The rating of the respective yachts was Vanessa 8.14 metres; Eunnamara 111.02 metres. The skippers were C. Treneek and J. Douglas. To-day’s race was won by Vanessa by one. minutes twenty-nine seconds. The weather was fine but botli yachts lor a time were becalmed. The Victorian finished with a spectacular dash ovei the line.
