Through the promptness of an onlooker, what was very nearly a tragedy was averted yesterday afternoon in the Waimakariri river, just above Stewart’s Gully. Two youths were rowing on the river about 4 p.m., when their craft sprang a leak and began to fill. One boy stood up and shouted while the* other continued rowing. An angler on the opposite shore secured a boat and sot out to the rescue. He was within a hundred yards of them when the boys’ craft sank. One could not swim, but the other kept him afloatuntil the angler arrived and took them both into his boat.
