BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY

VISIT OF INSPECTION

Several members of the Hokitika Borough Council, headed by the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and accompanied by Overseer Cliesterinaii, visited the bead works 'of the Borough water supply at Lake Kanieri yesterday afternoon. At the Lake, Mr Chesterman pointed out where it would be necessary to pierce the concrete weir erected by the Kanieri Electric Ltd. and the method suggested was explained. It was decided to acquaint the officers, of the Company of the proposal and invite their 00-operntion in the work. The line of pipes, approximately for the first mile, was then traversed. The Overseer indicated where he suggested a “short cut” through the grounds of the Acclimatisation Society which would save a considerable length of the new piping proposed to be laid. It was decided before reaching any do■ cision to have a line cut ol the suggested deviation and levels taken.

Various matters in connection wit’ the line of race wore inspected, including the crossing of creeks, etc. The pressure on the line of race was- tested at different points. This was satislactory in the first stages, but not so satisfactory later, and a more detailed test will be authorised probably later. The suggestion lor a new pipe line down the Kanieri river lied for a considerable distance, some three miles and more, was made and discussed: also suggestions in regard to the laying of the new pipes. The concensus of opinion appeared to he that the original line could be followed to the best advantage, and this course is like. Iv'to be followed. The opinion was expressed that the work proposed might he deferred for the present til! after the Fire Brigades’ demonstration, up till when there would be the usual summer tax on the regular supply. The supply, excepting when leaks suddenly developed, was keeping up very well, and the average supply in the reservoir whence the town supp'y was drawn, was at six feet.
