GERMAN BUDGET
LARGE DEFICIT. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). BERLIN, January 14. Cabinet is considering Herr Hilferding’s proposals to cover the Budgetdeficit of live hundred millions of marks, partly due to the increased reparations payments of three hundred millions. Herr ITilfcrding plans to increase the beer tax to the extent of 165 millions, spirits ninety millions, capita? tax 104 millions, succession duty 20 millions, and post office contributions 26 millions. He proposes to bold back payments to states and communes to the extent of 120 millions.
Most °f the proposals will meet with serious opposition. The Bavarian People’s Party threatens to withdraw its representatives from the Cabinet if the beer tax is 'increased, and states that they aie opposing the withholding of revenues, though M. Parker Gilbert criticised the present methods of assigning them. Cabinet is expected to spend the week discussing means of a- compromise. Many sided Opposition criticism has already been beard that increased taxation may lead the outside ■world to over-estimate Germany’s capacity to pay reparations..
