MIDNIGHT ASSAULT
CASE ADJOURNED, (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, January 15. Alfred Henry Driscoll, aged 21, a jockey, and Edward Leydon, aged 22, were charged to-day with being complicated in the midnight assault at Crcenlane on December 2(itli. The complainants were Kenneth Rowland Welch and Alan William Smithson. Moth received a severe handling and Smithson, who came from Christchurch to play in the Dominion tennis championships, could not compete. Welch was lett by his assailants bleeding profusely 'from a wound in the head and was rescued by Smithson, whose own injuries were not so serious.
After evidence was taken counsel ontered a plea for leniency, but Magistrate .McKean said the accused deserved to be heavily fined and convicted. The Chief Detective referred to Driscoll and Leydon as hoodlums on the air at midnight. Complainants denied refusing to assist them to repair a lault in their car or using bad language. The case was adjourned till Friday.
