TWO LIVES LOST

DROWNED IN ATTEMPTING RESCUE. TRAGEDY AT KAWIIIA. AUCKLAND, January 10. Two men who tried to rescue two youths who got into difficulties while bathing were drowned off the beach at lvawlna. yesterday afternoon. The names of the two victims are:— T. B. DILLIG’AR, a visitor from Hamilton. : CLARENCE ' HUNTER, aged US. son of Dr. Hunter, of Te Awamutu. There were a large number of picknickers at the beach at the heads, near the hot springs, , and'some .went in'bathing. When the two young men got into trouble and called for help Dillacar and Hunter rushed into tiewater to give assistance. Dillicar got one lad ashore, and then saw that .Hunter was in difficulties. He immediately ' swam out again, and about that time the lad whom Hunter was helping was washed up on to tne beach. It was realised by the anxious watchers on shore that neither Dillicar nor Hunter could regain the heacfi. Immediately' a numbei* of women formed a chain and waded in to try and help. The woman at the end of the chain almost reached Dillicar, but at that moment a big wave overwhelmed him. By that time limiter had also disappeared., Still bolding bands, the women fought their way back to the beach. Help was sent for and a search of the beach was commenced. Dillicar’s bpejy was recovered later in the day , Dillicar was a very .wclLknown, resident of Hamilton. TL 1 was a man about 50 years old. and had lived in Hamilton since boyhood. With his brother, William Dillicar. lie once conducted a large departmental store m the town, and latterly he had been manufacturing condiments on a large scale. He leaves a widow and a little girl of 10.
