VATICAN AND QUIRINAL
VATICAN AND" QUJRINAL. MUSSOLINI’S HINT. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON. January 9. In view of the frequent and conflicting statements of a probable settlement of the 58-year-old estrangement between the Vatican and Italy, the “ Daily News” Rome correspondent is endeavouring to ascertain the truth. He says the negotiations have undoubtedly reached a conclusive phase, enabling the Pope to rule as sovereign with a small state of fifteen thousand subjects. Mussolini’s latest speech in the Chamber, announcing great events for the next Parliament, is interpeted as a hint of the epoch making settlement. The Vatican negotiators were the lawyer Francesco Pacelli, brother of the Papal Nuncio at Berlin, on behalf of the Vatican; and Councillor Dominico Barone on behalf of Italy. The latter died recently after receiving the Pope’s blessing. The negotiations were then practically complete, Pacelli departing for Jerusalem.
